Our hard-working, dedicated corps of School Reading Volunteers who work at PS 48 were honored as Staten Islanders of the Week by New York 1 News in February. Reporters and videographers interviewed volunteers as they tutored young children at the school. Even the kids got into the act, relating how the volunteers have helped them not only learn to read, but have had positive impacts on their lives. SIMHS President/CEO Fern Zagor explained why the Society launched this program in 1960 and why our 200 School Reading Volunteers are among the Island’s most valuable mental health resources.
